Our Top Outdoor YouTubers of 2018

We don’t watch a lot of television in our house, but what we do watch is a lot of YouTube. To be precise, a lot of outdoor YouTube channels (and terrible parking/driving, children playing with toys and 80’s cartoons, but we’ll gloss over that).

Over the last year we’ve loved following the adventures of some of our old favourites, and have also discovered some inspiring new outdoor youtubers. If you’re looking for some ideas, or even just entertainment for these dark, winter evenings, here are our top 5 outdoor YouTubers of the last 12 months.

Canadian Joe has recently surpassed 1 million followers and it’s not difficult to see why he’s so popular. He’s been one of our favourites for a while, we absolutely love the mixture of the impressive Canadian wilderness and Joe’s down to earth style.

I try to show the realities of being out in the bush, whether it be an overnighter in the woods, or an extended, 10 day fly in canoe/fishing trip. I’ll leave in my failures, as well as my accomplishments, in an effort to show you who I really am, just a regular Canadian guy who enjoys spending time outdoors.

We discovered Shawn James of My Self Reliance through Joe Robinet, and the two have often collaborated. Shawn is a knowledgeable and engaging outdoorsman, who produces beautifully shot videos documenting his life in a log cabin that he built himself in the Canadian wilderness.

Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me.

He may be the smallest outdoor youtuber on our list in terms of followers, but Patrick’s well crafted videos are certainly worth a look. Mainly focusing on wild camping (particularly in the Peak District), he also features plenty of other interesting ideas, for example, camping in a tree or exploring underground Sheffield.

… my channel is about my varied interests mainly wild camping, but will also have videos on train travel, hopefully radio control planes when I have mastered the flying, and recently discovered Urban Exploration. I also like a drink of real ale so will be going on occasional pub walks in various cities.

Mike from TA Outdoors is one of the larger UK outdoor YouTubers and it won’t be long before he’s also hitting 1 million followers. His channel features beautifully shot outdoor videos about bushcraft, fishing and wild camping among other things. We’ve been especially enjoying his recent collaborations with Dustin from Bushcraft Tools, as we particularly love a bit of outdoor cooking

Bushcraft, Survival, Wild Camping, Wilderness Hiking Trips, Solo Overnight Camps, Fishing, Hunting, Cabin Building, DIY projects are all things I love. My dog joins me on some of the trips. His name is Jaxx. My name is Mike.

Our newest discovery is still a comparatively small channel, but you wouldn’t know it from the stunning videography. This beautiful Swedish channel features bushcraft and traditional outdoor skills, such as stove making and wood work, and is simply mesmerising. The ‘About’ section of this channel is concise, and that sums up the style of Swedwoods, as the videos feature no speaking, and we get few glimpses of the man behind the channel.

We hope that you enjoy our favourite outdoor YouTubers, comment below if you have any recommendations of your own.
