A Guide to Visiting the Canadian Side of the Niagara Falls for Hikers
Understandably, seeing the Niagara Falls is on a lot of hiker’s to do list. They
truly are a natural wonder and because much of the surrounding land has some sort of protected status there are plenty of great trails and hikes to enjoy. With this in mind, we thought we would put together a short guide for those of you who are planning to visit the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls.
Where to stay
Let’s start with where to stay. There is plenty of choice, but for a special
holiday like this it is nice to treat yourself to at least a couple of nights in luxury accommodation. The Niagara Falls Marriott certainly falls into that category. It is five-star and has recently been renovated, so all of the rooms are plush and pristine. This hotel has a long list of facilities, including a spa. There is nothing better than being able to come back after a long hike and have all of your aches and pains massaged away. If you can, book yourself a room with the view of the waterfalls, it will make your stay in this beautiful hotel feel even more special.
Woodend Conservation Area Trail
If you are looking for an easy hike, this trail is a great option. It is a 3.2km
looped trail, which offers you the chance to get close to plenty of wildlife.
Perfect for when you only have a little time to spare.
The Niagara Whirlpool Loop
This trail is perfect for the more advanced hiker. It covers 5.5kms with an
elevation gain of 183m and, in places, it is quite rocky. The whirlpool is the
highlight of this looped trail, you get an amazing view of this powerful natural feature.
The Niagara Glen Trail
Once you have climbed up to it using the stairway, this trail goes on for about 4 km. It takes you along a series of rugged paths that wind their way through the amazing geological features. The views of the rapidly flowing Niagara River are amazing, plus you get to see the Whirlpool from above. You will need to be relatively fit to be able to complete this trail, but it is well worth taking the time to do so.
The Niagara River Recreation Trail
At 56kms this trail is a long one. It is primarily designed with cyclists in mind, but a lot of people enjoy walking it. Most of it is really easy and relatively flat. Plus, there is plenty to do and see along the way. There are restaurants, shops and attractions and a few bed and breakfast places you can spend the night in. This route is a really great option if you want to see a bit more than just wildlife.
