The Swiss Army Knife Book & Giveaway!

The Swiss Army Knife Book & Giveaway!

I was recently sent a copy of The Swiss Army Knife Book by nature instructor Felix Immler and I have to say that it is a fantastic book. It walks you through a variety of projects, from making simple tools to setting up camp, all the while just using natural materials and a pocket knife. There are 7o0 beautiful step by step photos to guide you through, I’ve also enjoyed watching Felix’s Youtube channel for extra help and inspiration.

The book starts off with some simple handmade tools (photo by Matthew Worden)

The Swiss Army Knife Book begins by teaching you how to make simple, improvised tools, such as  a digging stick and a wooden mallet. I haven’t been brave enough to try any projects yet, but I think that even I could make myself a usable digging stick!

Felix guides you through the processes required, here making a stone hammer (photos by Matthew Worden)

The book then takes you through how to build and furnish your own camp. It really is quite impressive what can be achieved with very few tools.

There’s a big section on cooking and utensils in the book, like this pot drainer (photos by Matthew Worden)

Felix says “I hope to bridge the gap with this book, by showing just how much fun you can have by making everyday objects for yourself, by using only natural materials and your pocket knife as tools, creating a comfortable camp in the wild and having a thrilling trip amid the great outdoors”.

This would be a great book for families with teens and older children, who are looking for adventurous ways to spend time outdoors together.

My husband loves his Swiss Army knife – there are so many uses for it. I think I would make a skewer to toast marshmallows (better than splinters from a stick)!

I think it’s important that our children should be taught the basic skills for survival and not to rely completely on technology. This is why I love forest school! Looks like an interesting book.

This looks really cool. I didn’t get to do too much with knives in Girl Scouts, so this would help fill in some gaps.
