How to Make Time for Running

How to Make Time for Running

Like many people, I am short on time.

Luke and I both work full time and, just to make things more complicated, I work rotating shifts ( a week of early shifts and a week of lates) and then there’s the kids as well. I find myself constantly feeling overwhelmed and like I’m chasing my tail. One thing that helps my wellbeing is exercise, but of course that is just adding one more thing into my already busy schedule.

So how do I fit running into my life, ensuring it has a positive impact and doesn’t feel like an extra chore?

Walk/ Run Commutes

Firstly, I make good use of my commute. When I’m on lates I will walk to work and catch the bus home at least a couple of times a week. I’m not brave enough to run to work, as I get so hot and sweaty (even in the depths of winter) and my face would be bright red all day!

When I’m on an early shift, I will get the bus in and then run home. It takes a bit of organisation, but it’s a great way to make the most efficient use of my time.

A running vest comes in super handy on my run commutes

Top Tips for a successful run commute

  • Prepare the night before. I take a bit of time to get my stuff ready and work out the logistics the day before.
  • Carry as little stuff as possible. I wear my sports bra, trainers and running top to work, and then I keep some bits at work (i.e shoes, a change of clothes and some make up) so I don’t have to worry about carrying things back and forward
  • A running vest makes life so much easier! In fact I would say it’s essential, I also plan to use mine on summer walks when I don’t need too much kit. I just have a cheap one from Amazon, but it does the job.

The School Run

I also use the school run as a way to maximise my time. I’m really lucky in that there is a big park in between home and school which is perfect for running. Depending on my shift I drop the kids and then run round the park, or I run first and then pick them up.

We’re lucky we have a scenic walk across the park as our school run

As I’m already out of the house, I feel like it saves me a bit of time. It’s still quite tight when I’m on lates to get home, get changed and get a quick run in before pick up time, but even a short run is better than nothing.

Family Time

Like many working parents, I feel guilty if I’m doing something for myself at the expense of spending time with my family. But it really doesn’t have to be a choice between one or the other. Recently, I have been trying to work on this  and make a positive change.

I have been making a big effort to include the boys and be more active with them. Firstly, we have started doing junior parkrun. This is a great way for them to get outside and do some exercise in a really supportive environment. I quite enjoy the 2k easy run as well!

We have also been encouraging them to get on their bikes a bit more. I plan to go out running with them more often as it’s a good way to keep us all happy. Plus it means I don’t have to choose between spending time with the boys or running.
