Walks near Rushden Lakes

In a bid to spend more time outdoors more and get the boys used to walking a bit further we’re always looking for easy walks, but we still need lots of interest to keep the whole family engaged.

A couple of weeks ago we decided to head to Rushden Lakes Shopping Centre, take advantage of their 5 hours free parking and explore the local area.

If you are looking for walks near Rushden Lakes there are several routes you can take, including to Stanwick Lakes (which is about 3 miles), Irthingborough, Higham Ferrars and Wellingborough.

There are many routes from Rushden Lakes

We started heading towards Stanwick, as it’s one of our favourite places to take the boys, but at a 6 miles round trip it was a little too long for a Sunday stroll. None the less we had a great walk along the accessible paths.

The paths are ideal for family walks or bike rides, and are all pushchair accessible too

We took our binoculars along to keep the boys interested, and there was plenty to look at as we walked.

The Nene Wetlands Nature Reserve is managed by the Wildlife Trust We enjoyed looking over the water and taking in the views

As always, we took plenty of snacks and had a rest along for the way for a quick lunch break. These days we are very much about making sure everyone enjoys the experience, rather than counting how many miles we can tick off.

Still smiling as we stopped for lunch!

It was nice to spot some signs of Spring as we walked along and, with a bit of sunshine and blue sky, it put us all in a good mood.

We will definitely be heading back to Rushden Lakes to explore more of the Nene Wetlands Nature Reserve and start building up to longer walks now the boys are getting older. There are so many options for routes for all abilities and ages, so it makes a brilliant starting point for a walk (and you can always grab a bite to eat or have a look round the shops if you fancy it).

Have you been to Rushden Lakes, did you know there was so much to do there?

I live in Rushden and have visited many times since Rushden Lakes opened. I have taken my son there numerous times to enjoy the activity options, cinema, shopping, eating and of course walking! I love the quick trail around the lake with the boardwalk and the play areas they have. It’s a good base to walk to Chester House too (although this can get a little bit flooded sometimes!).
If I’m by myself I walk there and then onward to Stanwick Lakes – or beyond along the old railway line, then I sometimes go to Wellingborough and come back via Irchester Country Park. I’m so lucky to have this on my doorstep!
The only downside is the traffic at times!
