Enjoying Family Adventures

Enjoying Family Adventures

I don’t know about anyone else, but these days I don’t always find it easy to make the time to get outside and enjoy some family outdoor adventures.

I don’t know whether it’s just the overriding cold and darkness of the winter that is dragging me down, or the general stresses of combining work and family life, but it feels harder than ever to make time for getting out and enjoying some family time.

It’s not always easy finding the time and motivation to get out

We recently had a lovely walk around some local woods, and I realised that actually it doesn’t have to be so difficult. Here’s what I have learned over the last few years about enjoying time outdoors with the whole family:

Don’t call it a walk!

First tip to getting out of the door-never tell the kids you’re going for a walk! It’s certain to put them right off from the beginning. This time we simply said that we were going to explore the woods, but in the past we’ve been on adventures, missions, hunts and expeditions. Make it sound exciting and get everyone on board from the start.

Outdoor adventures are so much more than walking!

No Pressure

Don’t set targets or expectations, for example how many miles you’re going to cover or how long you’re going to take. Just go and enjoy it, whatever ‘it’ turns out to be!

Anything and Everything can be an Adventure

Adventures don’t have to be arduous or difficult. Adventures (or microadventures) can be as simple as enjoying a hot chocolate in the woods, or exploring a fallen log or eating lunch outside or trying to find the biggest stick. Enjoy the small things and find the fun in the everyday.

Be Prepared

Remember to take plenty of snacks and drinks so you can build in lots of breaks to keep everyone energised and motivated. Or at least, if all else fails you can resort to a bit of bribery if needed!

Always factor in lots of breaks to keep everyone smiling
