5 Reasons The Malverns are Perfect for an Outdoor Break

We were recently invited to spend a couple of nights exploring The Malverns to see exactly what they have to offer an outdoorsy family like us. Despite being less than two hours away, it was an area that we had never visited before, so we were keen to discover somewhere new and enjoy some family time. So what did we find?

Here are my top 5 reasons The Malvern Hills are perfect for an outdoor break

The Scenery

It’s been a super stressful time for us lately with work and moving house, so we were in desperate need of a break. To be honest, the temptation to sit at home and veg out on the sofa was strong, but as soon as the rolling green hills of Worcestershire opened out before us, all was instantly right with the world. I wrote recently about being more mindful while outdoors, and I certainly thought about this during our trip. The calming effect of being away from the pressures of our everyday lives and just focusing on the here and now was immediately restorative.

The view from our accommodation was stunning and helped to eliminate the stress we’ve been feeling lately

I know that we’ve had a lot of rain lately, but it really was very green and lush everywhere, it was truly beautiful.

Family Friendly Walks

While researching the trip, I was so impressed with the range of walking routes available. From the family friendly to the more challenging, such as the 9 mile end to end walk along the ridge of the Malvern Hills. If you want to really make the most of the wonderful scenery that I was so enthralled by, head up to the Worcestershire Beacon just outside Great Malvern and enjoy unbroken views across several counties (if the weather plays ball!). These walks and more are available on the easy to use  MalvernsWalk app.

Although the app is great and has very clear instructions, don’t forget a map if you’re heading into the hills!

We didn’t get as much walking done as we wanted, but we did manage a few short walks, including using the app to complete the 1.2 mile trail around Great Malvern which was perfect for Finn’s little legs.

Accommodation Options

One of the great things about The Malverns is that there is something for everyone, whether you like a comfortable hotel, a farmhouse B&B, camping, glamping or anything in between. We were very impressed with our self catering accommodation at Pitlands Farm , but we would love to come back and try out something different.

We spotted this cute treehouse while Alpaca Trekking, which is available to stay in.

Range of Activities

As with the plethora of places to stay, there is also a massive range of activities to keep the whole family occupied. As well as walking and cycling, there are so many things to do, whether you’re after an action packed break, or a more sedate affair. If, like us, you are National Trust members there are properties like Croome and Brockhampton to explore, as well as gardens, vineyards and pretty towns like Great Malvern and Tenbury Wells to potter around. I loved the fact that there are plenty of options, handy when catering for a family group with different needs! We had a great time trying something new and hanging out with some new friends while alpaca trekking.

The Malverns offer a range of activities for all ages.

Events

Unfortunately, as it was a flying visit this time we didn’t get a chance to experience any of the events that are held in the area throughout the year. There’s a whole range from food and country shows, theatre and music to experience. We shall certainly be back and hopefully get the chance to join in next time.

Have you ever visited The Malverns?

Looks great! I’ve been to this area once or twice and particularly like the Malvern Hills. The blog post gives a good insight as to what can be done. Very informative and interesting. Hopefully one day I can be back in this area of the UK. Thanks for sharing! #adventurecalling

The Malverns are beautiful aren’t they. I worked with NT Croome two years ago, and it was such a joy looking out over the scenery. Not too far from us either, so might have to plan in a trip soon. #MondayEscapes

  • How amazing is this tree house?! So great to read that you felt so relaxed nd refreshed just by getting away from the stress of every day life. I find short breaks away so restorative too when the going gets too tough.
