Starting 2018 off on the right foot with #BerghausFirstFoot

As anyone who has ever read this blog knows, I love sharing our everyday adventures and showing just how easy it is to spend more time outside. When I heard about the Berghaus and their plans to encourage more people to head outdoors this new year, I don’t need much encouragement to join in with the fun.

First Foot

The tradition of first foot goes back centuries, but Berghaus have given it a modern twist. It used to be that your first foot was the first person to cross your threshold on New Year’s Day, bringing good luck for the year ahead. This year however, Berghaus have turned that idea on it’s head. They wanted your first foot to be the first person you headed outdoors with on the first day of the new year.

Local Walk

In our usual style, we decided to give this idea a go and head out for a walk in our local area. As well as me, Luke and Finn, I also roped in my sister and brother in law to make it a real family outing. After the hectic Christmas period, it was great to slow down and spend some quality time together.

Here’s a picture from my new year’s day instagram story

The weather wasn’t perfect, and we only did a couple of miles but it was still so worth it. No time spent outdoors is a waste!

The right gear

I was lucky enough to get a little Christmas present from Berghaus. The insulated jacket you can see below was just what I needed for a damp day with a cold wind. I’ve had my eye on one for ages, but choosing new gear always takes so long with the amount of choice available. I have been very impressed so far. The jacket is amazingly warm, but so light and comfortable. I was worried that down jackets might feel a bit bulky, but that isn’t the case at all. I will do a full review once I’ve worn it more and tested it properly.

I am loving my new jacket, just what I need for the British winter

Perfect End

As with all good UK winter walks, we had to refuel afterwards with a pub lunch. There’s no better way to rehydrate and warm up!

All good winter walks should feature a warm pub!

It felt great to start the year off so positively. 2018 is going to be particularly busy for us as a family and I know that I need to be realistic about how much adventure I can fit in. That being said, I have lots of ideas and lots of places that we plan to go. I’ll post a little look ahead in the next week or so as I like to write plans down-it makes them seem more real.

What are your plans for 2018? Any big adventures on the horizon or, like us, are you planning lots of smaller outings, I’d love to hear about them all!

I had every intention of getting outside for our vacation but the temps were -15 as a high. Way too cold!

Your new jacket looks lovely! I love the tradition of a New Year day’s walk and we tried this year to have one but the weather had other ideas. It was a 1.5 mile bimble before the rain really came down. All good walks should end with a warming pub, I wish ours had the other day. #AdventureCalling

What a cool idea for the new year! Our plans include getting out and about more- I just got a bike and a seat for Little to ride on it with me, so have been practicing with that! Here’s to a fun and healthy outdoorsy 2018!

We’ve had some amazing walks this winter. My three year old has turned a corner in terms of stamina so I can’t wait to do more walking now he’s more able. We’re heading to Crete at Easter and I’ve booked us some great places to stay in the mountains where the walks sound really interesting, can’t wait! #adventurecalling

Our main aim is to climb a mountain – so I need to look into walking boots and warm outdoor clothing too. Love your coat. Sarah #adventurecalling

Here in Georgia, the state parks started First Day Hikes a few years back. Select parks open up and have guided tours to waterfalls, historic sites, etc…. It’s just a great way to start off the new year!

I love reading your blogs. I wish I had done as much with my two when they were so little! I also admire you 100% for finding the time to do everything! It always makes me seem so lazy that I can’t find time to write up all my blogs 🙂 Our first day hike was along the East Coast and it was stunning….blog to follow, I promise!

  • I’d never heard of this New Year tradition, but I love how Berghaus have turned it on its head to get more people to go outside. Might give it ago next time round!

This is a great initiative and I love the jacket. Anything that encourage people outdoors is brilliant – particularly if it ends with a pub lunch! #adventurecalling
