The Jurassic Coast & Portland

The Jurassic Coast & Portland

During our recent stay at Andrewhayes Holiday Park, we took the opportunity to drive along the coast, from Lyme Regis to Portland. This stretch, which forms part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site, is one of the most beautiful and important coastal sites in the UK. Although we live in the Midlands, about as far from the sea as possible, we love the coast, and couldn’t turn down the opportunity to explore this stunning landscape.

Hopefully these photos give a taster of our journey.

Lyme Regis has a lovely sandy beach and is a good place to start exploring the Jurassic Coast

Lyme Regis is a traditional British seaside town, with a lovely sandy beach, plenty of ice cream shops and an arcade. I loved it, it reminded me of my childhood and I enjoyed spending a few hours here with my family. Just watch out for the seagulls, they’ve got some attitude!

Our next stop along the Jurassic Coast was West Bexington

We stopped at West Bexington to stretch our legs and have a walk along the South West Coast Path.  It’s a beautiful part of the world and there are many places along the way that are worth a stop off.

We continued along the coast, right down to the Isle of Portland. We parked by Portland Bill, the famous lighthouse and spent a good couple of hours exploring the area. Finn loved it, especially when I told him we’d see a lighthouse like in Postman Pat, and the ice cream went down well too!

It’s an enjoyable drive down the coast to the Isle of Portland and the iconic lighthouse

The rocky coastline is stunningly beautiful

We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed a clear sunny day by the coast

If you’d like some more inspiration, my fellow GetOutside Champion, Martin Curtis has written a great guide to the 10 best geological features to see on the Jurassic Coast.

Have you ever visited the Jurassic Coast?

We’re heading down that way next week. Fingers crossed that the sunny weather continues over half term as we’re camping!
