Northants Walk: Badby & Fawsley 11/01/14

We’re currently planning a very exciting 10 day camping holiday taking in The Lakes, the Highlands and the Yorkshire Dales. Of course there will be plenty of walking involved, including the not inconsequential Helvellyn and  Ben Nevis. With this in mind we have attempted to start working on our fitness so we can enjoy our time away. In reality I have run around the local park twice and we huffed and puffed our way around this short circular walk yesterday. Needless to say, we have a way to go! Luckily, if yesterday is anything to go by we should at least have some fun along the way.

For this 3 mile (ish) circuit we started at the church in Badby, handily right opposite the church is the start of the Knightley Way (taking it’s name from the Knightley family who owned Fawsley Hall from 1416-1913).

We followed the Knightley Way down a narrow path, we then diverted onto the footpath heading towards Badby Woods. We began walking through the woods but as it was a tad muddy we decided to rejoin the Knightley Way which skirts around the edge. We followed the path around the woods, and then came out on top of the hill looking down on Fawsley. It was a beautiful day, sunny and crisp, and the view was stunning.

We headed down the field towards St Mary’s Church which sits serenely in Fawsley Park. We headed right along the road, past the Hall (now a swanky country hotel) and joined the footpath on the right hand side. We headed back up the hill, a very small hill, more of a mound really, and finding ourselves panting a little (ok, a lot) we realised just how much work we have to do before we meet some real summits later in the year.

We again followed the Knightley Way around the woods, and then took a footpath on the left hand side leading back to the village.

Overall a lovely short amble and the start of a great year of walking.
