5 Things you must do when you get back from camping

5 Things you must do when you get back from camping

I love camping but I do not love packing up the tent and all the gear and then unpacking it again when we get home. It’s bad enough unpacking a suitcase, but a whole car is something else. Add into the mix the unpredictable British weather and it’s likely that everything will also be dripping wet and muddy. I know that when you get home all you want to do is go to the loo in private and wash your hair, but trust me; a bit of time and effort now will pay dividends in the future.

  • Take a picture of your car packed up so you know how it all goes back in. Ok, not technically something you do when you get home, but it’s a great tip that has helped us out in the past so thought I’d include it. This will save invaluable time and many arguments, especially useful if (when) you are packing up in the rain.

  • Make sure your tent is bone dry before packing it away. This really is important. Many, many tents have been thrown away or, even worse, consigned to ebay to be sold as ‘spares or repairs’ after being put away damp. There are no shortcuts here. We usually pray for a sunny spell and put ours up in the garden for as long as it takes to properly dry out. This is also a good time to thoroughly clean and do any necessary repairs/maintenance.
I'm not sure this photo does it justice, but it was very very wet when we packed up and left our last campsite

  •  Make sure your bedding is dry. I take our sleeping bags to the local laundrette to give them a bit of tlc. Once they smell musty there’s no getting rid of that odour! I then pack all the bedding together in a large holdall so I can just grab it next time. I should add this applies to any other items, for example SIMs, chairs and tent carpets. Make sure they are all dry and well aired before putting away.
  •  Clean and check all equipment. We have a small house with just one large storage cupboard so we need to be organised. I keep most things in plastic boxes, for example we have a kitchen box, a box with our camping/walking clothes in and a box for bathroom and baby items. When we get back I clean it all (or put through dishwasher/washing machine) including the actual boxes. I also replace anything that we’ve used up (like matches) or that’s broken. That way when we come to go camping again I can just grab the boxes from our cupboard (of doom) and know that we have everything we need.

  • Put your feet up. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have spent most of your camping trip enviously checking out everyone else’s set ups. So, after all the exertion of unpacking, have a sit down, put the kettle on and find your next tent. You deserve it!

If you’ve got a great tip please tell me. Being organised doesn’t come naturally to me so I need all the help I can get!

Yeah we always have things lying around for a while! I hate unpacking so much, it feels good when it’s all away though ☺

I loved our first proper camping trip this year, but the amount if camping gear was ridiculous and I must gave done a trillion washes when we returned! I spent a lot of time checking out everyone else’s tents and set ups? Does everyone do this?!

Yes everyone is secretly (or not! ) checking out everyone else’s tents! I know what you mean about washing, luckily it’s the one chore I don’t mind. We’re always trying to slim down our gear but never quite manage it!

I smiled reading these as we upgraded from a tent to a caravan. I know all about making sure the tent is dry as we now have to do the same thing with the awning (shudder). It’s usually draped over things in the garage as inevitably it’s raining when you pack away! Great suggestions. The picture of the car boot is genius! #TheList

It’s always raining when you pack away, that’s one thing you can rely on! We always take a photo now as got so fed up of not being able to get everything in the car on the way home (despite the fact it all went in perfectly on the way out!)

Ha ha, I’ve had to put a damp tent in the car before due to downpour on exit, not fun! #thelist

This is really good advice. We’re good about the tent, sleeping mats etc. but our box of supplies often gets left until it’s time to panic before our next trip. Need to sort that out 🙂

I know the feeling, I love just being able to grab our boxes and shove them in the car-it does take a bit of effort though! That’s easier said than done when you come back tired from camping and have about 3 million loads of washing to sort out as well 🙁

  • Hey Lauren, this is a great and really helpful post! I especially liked the tip to stock up on stuff that ran out straight away – we’re always running round the house looking for lighters that actually have any fuel left in them last minute!

Thanks! It is a pain, and the last thing you feel like doing, but when it comes to the the next trip-it’s all worth it!

Good selection of tips, certainly saves time next time around if everything is prepared and cleaned after each trip out 🙂

Yes definitely, it’s pain -especially when you’re tired after a trip-but worth it!

  • I leave the mystic art of car tetris to my husband! Never thought of taking a photo of the packed car though, that’s a good one! We use lots of those reusable shopping bags to pack our stuff – he finds like they are like Lego, they’re so easy to pack and stuff in the car. Pillows are our undoing every time – they take so much space. Do you have a solution for that?

  • Like you I detest packing up but think it is so important to get it all dry and put away. Love the idea of taking a photo of the car though – definitely one for our next trip. I also like the idea of replacing things – make a list and make sure it is replaced before putting away. We do the boxes of Kitchen stuff, and have a place for everything but every camping trip we learn something from fellow campers. Happy camping everyone #AdventureCalling

This is really helpful thank you. We enjoy camping but not all the faff that comes with it. We still haven’t yet organised our camping box but we’re off again this weekend, so maybe it will get done! #adventurecalling

There’s nothing worse than packing away a wet tent is there.
I’ve hung our two man tent on the washing line before now – not sure how successful that would be for bigger ones though.
The photo is a brilliant idea!
