The Lake District: Easy Ambleside Walk

The Lake District: Easy Ambleside Walk

3 Mile circular Ambleside-High Sweden Bridge

As we had set off from our home in Northampton early, we had plenty of time to tackle an easy walk before heading to the campsite. We arrived in Ambleside early afternoon and, after a quick pub lunch to build our strength up, we headed off on this quiet, circular walk.

You can see the full route of our easy Ambleside walk here

We started from the car park on Rydal Road (LA22 9AY), coming out of the main entrance we crossed over the mini roundabout and along Smithy Brow. Taking the 2nd left, Sweden Bridge Lane, we continued walking up the hill and away from Ambleside. This walk gives great views across the town and over Lake Windermere.

The lane eventually flattens out somewhat and becomes a stony footpath, which we followed until reaching the picturesque High Sweden Bridge.

We crossed over the old packhorse bridge and headed up a steep path straight ahead of us. This is the steepest part of the walk but follows a clearly defined line so is not too tricky. The path then heads left and back towards Ambleside, ending up in Nook Lane, off Smithy Brow.

A perfect opener to our Lake District weekend: easy to navigate, easy terrain but some great views and strangely quiet paths. We headed to the campsite, eagerly looking forward to a cold beer.
