Review: The Norman Knight, Whichford, Warwickshire

This pub impressed us so much that I thought it worthy of a proper write up, rather than just a quick mention. Working in the wine trade (which isn’t as glamorous as it sounds) I like to think I know a bit about food and drink and, as my partner Luke also enjoys a decent ale, hopefully our opinion is worth something!

Firstly the setting of The Norman Knight is lovely as it’s right opposite the village green. To our townie eyes it was all a bit Midsomer Murders, but the beer garden is a great place to enjoy a sunny afternoon/evening.  Secondly, the range of beer was fantastic.  There were some top quality ales, including the local Hook Norton as you’d rightly expect, but also some interesting world lagers on tap, which maybe you wouldn’t. I like to think I know my way around most drinks available in the UK, but it was a pleasant surprise to try a couple of delicious lagers that I’d never heard of.  The atmosphere is also excellent, managing somehow to feel like a local but also be incredibly welcoming to visitors. I put this mostly down to the friendly, relaxed service.

The first night we visited there was a brilliant blues duo playing which suited the setting perfectly. We decided to return the next night for a meal and we weren’t disappointed.

As usual I chose the wine (a nice Chilean Sauvignon Blanc in case you were wondering). We started by sharing a baked Camembert which was divine.

 I then had the fish and chips, which was delicious but too big to finish, even after a good walk! Luke went for pork belly, he was strangely quiet during the meal so I think he must have enjoyed it! Being too full for a pudding, we paid and waddled home, very satisfied.  The evening set us back just under £60 which, considering we had two or three drinks each before our meal, we thought was pretty good value.

I heartily recommend The Norman Knight, whether you fancy exploring some great ales, or treating yourself to a slap up meal, you won’t be disappointed.
