Join in with the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this January

A few days ago I shared the idea of The Big Outdoor Bloggers Cleanup as a way of getting outside and doing something worthwhile in the grey month of January. Well, today I have another way that you and your family can spend some time outdoors and contribute to an important project. Between the 28th and 30th of January, the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch takes place across the UK. It is the world’s largest wildlife survey and has been running since 1979, providing an invaluable picture of the health of our British wildlife.

The Big Garden Birdwatch is a great way to spend time outside and learn more about your surroundings

All you need to do is spend an hour in your garden or local park and make a note of the birds that you spot. You can download a pack here, which includes all you need to know, including some common species to look out for and and what to feed them. You can also mention if any wildlife, other than birds, are regular visitors to your garden. Then either fill out the survey form included in your pack, or upload your results online by 17th February.

It’s a brilliant way to get outside and makes a great nature project for children of all ages. You can even expand on the topic and make some bird feeders at home, one of my favourite blogs, Craft Invaders, has some great ideas. The RSPB shop  also has all the supplies you need to provide a gourmet meal for your feathery visitors.

Are you taking part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch? If you are I’d love to hear your results and see some photos.

This is such a great example of how everyone can get involved in monitoring and supporting our native wildlife – thanks for including our bird feeder 🙂

I think I may try this in the local park as my back yard has not been getting much bird action! Thanks for the reminder.:)

Same here! We bought a lovely bird feeder last year and haven’t seen a bird since!

I always take part but I’m pretty sure the birds know exactly when I’m looking out for them as they seem to disappear for the day! We had lots in our garden this weekend but I’m pretty sure they’ll have flown off this Saturday.

Of course! Sod’s law they’ll all disappear at the wrong moment. We haven’t had a bird in our garden for months (despite the lovely feeder we bought) so think I will decamp to the local park and count the pigeons.
