Peak District: Easy Ilam Circular Walk

Peak District: Easy Ilam Circular Walk

Easy Ilam 3 mile circular walk

So I’d managed our first walk with no major mishaps. We hadn’t got lost, it turns out I can read a map, my new walking shoes didn’t rub and my legs still seem to work.  Success! Our second walk of the weekend was a scenic 3 mile circuit beginning and ending at Ilam Hall.

You can see the full route for our Ilam circular walk here

Now a National Trust property, there is ample parking at the hall (free for NT members), and while the interior is not open to the public, the gardens are lovely to stroll through. I also recommend visiting the tearooms and sitting outside to admire the views across to Dovedale.

We started by walking through the Italian gardens, past the Church on our right hand side and out through the front entrance. We carried on walking, passing the memorial and over the bridge. Immediately after crossing the river, we turned left and followed the footpath along the River Manifold. Once we were level with Coldwall Bridge, we turned right and followed the track going up the hill. At the top we walked through the gate (to the left of the stile) and passed through the farmyard. Crossing the lane we went straight on into the field in front of us.  At this point we headed to the far right hand corner of the field. Reaching the corner, we turned right and joined the footpath which runs alongside a fence towards the lane into Blore. At the lane we turned right and walked through the tiny village, straight over the crossroads and headed towards Blore Pastures carpark, which is a few hundred yards on the right. This is a great picnic spot and has a great views of Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale.

We walked through the carpark to the far end and joined the footpath heading back down towards Ilam. We followed the path, and when we reached the road we crossed straight over. This brought us back to Ilam Hall via a scenic side entrance. All in all a lovely short easy walk for a relaxing Bank Holiday weekend.
